Nostalgia for The Matrix

The Matrix

The Legendary trilogy for The Matrix has just come back to theaters for its 20th anniversary. A film that revolutionized cinematography techniques and set a powerful fashion trend.

Trinity is being chased by some police officers and the agents Smith and Brown. She knocks the first policeman trying to handcuff her, then she jumps, the camera follows her in a 180° turn while she flows in the air. Trinity falls back again to kick another officer and make him fall to the ground.

This is one of the most memorable scenes in the history of cinematography for its visual and sound effects. Yet, what about costume design? Would The Matrix be the same without that unmistakable all in black leather outfits and sunglasses?

Fashion at the end of the 90s was kind of eclectic, a little out from that image of turtle neck sweaters, checked or tartan skirts, chokers and dark lips that instantly come to our minds when thinking about the style of the time -thanks to its great comeback-. In reality, at the end of this decade, silhouettes were less dynamic. The looks were composed, for example, by long denim skirts, bright colors, and textures combined to appear tacky. It was more about a juxtaposition that a harmonious composition.

Here you’ll see some celebrities wearing the top fashion trends of the time according to Cosmopolitan.

The Matrix made a clean cut of style filled with sobriety, revolutionary as you can see. Jackets in different styles: trucker, mackintosh coats, with mao collar… pants, simple shirts, boots, and unique slender sunglasses; mostly black on black (Anna Wintour doesn’t like this). After The Matrix release in 1999, many wanted to have that look. So below, see my favorite picks to get a 2019 Matrix look.

Trinity’s Jacket

Today, she could perfectly pull off the look 20 from Alexander McQueen, Fall 2019 Ready-To-Wear.

Morpheus’ sunglasses

Today, the iconic glasses worn by Morpheus ( Laurence Fishburne) would look like these, designed by a South Korean eyewear brand.

Neo’s Mao Collar

The Mao collar for shirts or jackets is very elegant. Neo ( Keanu Reeves ) showed us.

A cool update could be one as this version by Dior in Fall 2019 Menswear.

Persephone in The Matrix Reloaded

The Italian actress, Monica Bellucci, wore the color block (and latex) trend before it was cool and she made it with such elegance.

This look from Alexander Wang – Spring 2020 Ready-To-Wear can be as well a modern adaptation for Persephone’s style.

More reasons to think about the trend? ‘Matrix 4’ is coming

Rumors about a new episode for the story are not rumors anymore. Weeks ago, journals and magazines as Variety, GQ, and CNN, confirmed ‘Matrix 4’ is on the go and the shooting will start in 2020. Is Keanu Reeves going to perform in the sequel? We don’t know yet.

In the meantime, let’s just have fun trying to incorporate these styling tricks in our closet. Sounds good?
